Matt Baker won Maryville’s first National Championship of the Division II era in March 2013. Wrestling at 197 pounds, he posted a sterling 40-1 record and was the No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class his entire senior season. Baker was a two-time All-American and a four-time Academic All-American as chosen by the Wrestling Coaches Association. In addition, he was voted to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American Division II first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Baker was named the 2013 Maryville University Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He was held in such high regard that he was selected the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Sportsmanship award, even though wrestling was not yet a conference sponsored sport by the league. Matt graduated from Maryville in 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in biology and earned a Master’s degree in education.
