The Maryville women's soccer team was tripped up 2-0 by Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky., Friday afternoon. The Saints drop to 4-11-1 overall, 4-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Knights, who sit in second place in the GLVC and are ranked No. 23 in this week's NSCAA poll, improve to 12-2-1 overall, 11-2 in the GLVC.
Sam Poteet had the first good scoring chance for the Saints when he put a shot on goal that forced BU keeper Amy Kunowski to come up with a save. Alex Reis launched another strong shot that forced another save by the Knights. Bellarmine broke on top in the 26th minute of play when Leah Loven scored after a corner kick. The score remained 1-0 until halftime.
After intermission, Maryville carried the play early in the second half. The Saints earned a corner kick in the 67th minute, but missed on three straight shots. At the 77:16 mark, the Knights doubled their lead with a long shot from just outside the penalty area. Poteet, who led the team with three shots, had Maryville's final scoring chance, but her blast just missed high as Bellarmine held on for the win.
