Baseball Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader at No. 28 Harding

The Maryville baseball team traveled to No. 28 Harding to open the 2012 season but dropped both ends of a doubleheader by the matching score of 3-1. The squads close out the three-game series Sunday.
 
In the first game, the Bisons struck for the first run in the third inning as it pushed across an unearned run. Harding added another run in the fifth when Frock singled to left to plate a run and a 2-0 edge. The Saints tallied their first run of the season in the sixth. Zach Bradford drew a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Bryce Bastien singled to center as Maryville closed to 2-1. However, Harding answered in a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Saints put a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but was thrown out stealing third. Maryville put another runner on board in the eighth but stranded him at first for their last chance. The Saints outhit the Bisons 6-4 but were only able to manufacture the single run.
 
In the second contest, a seven-inning affair, Harding again scored single runs early and held the Saints off. The Bisons threatened a crooked number but the Saints held them to just one unearned run as Harding stranded two runners. The Bisons went up 2-0 with two hits and scored a run on an infield groundout. The Saints struck for their run in the sixth inning. Nick Little reached on a throwing error, and took second on Aaron Asher’s single. Little reached third on Kyle Kinyon’s single and scored on Bastien’s fielder’s choice RBI. However, Harding answered in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double and held on for another 3-1 win.
 
Bastien had both RBIs and had two hits on the day, while Kinyon also recorded two hits during the doubleheader.
