Softball Topples #15 Southern Indiana 6-5 in Home Field Finale

The Maryville softball made its final game at the Maryville Softball Field a memorable one as the Saints defeated No. 15 Southern Indiana 6-5. USI won the first game 12-3. The Saints will be playing at a new home in two seasons as a new University residence hall will be built where the current field is located.

In the first game, the Screaming Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first on a three-run homer, and the visitor's extended their lead on a two-run blast by MacKenzi Dorsam. The Saints got a run back in the fourth on a USI error, and Dani Williams launched a solo home run in the sixth. USI scored at least one run in the last four innings. Ashley Marks doubled Kelsey Martin in to close the scoring in the seventh inning.

Game two saw both teams score a run in their first at-bats. After USI tallied, Krystal Rock singled Marks home for a 1-1 tie. Heather Wernle and Meredith Brown had back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the second. Alex Flasch put down a sac bunt to move the duo into scoring position. Courtney Ferguson delivered a two-run single to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. USI tied the game in the third on a two-run homer by Brooke Harmening but Flasch answered with a solo blast to left to give the Saints a 4-3 lead after four innings.

In the fifth, Marks added her own round tripper to build a 5-3 advantage. The Saints then loaded the bases as Williams singled, and Rock and Wernle both drew walks. Brown then lifted a sac fly to left that scored Williams with what proved to be the game-winning run. USI hit another homer in the sixth to trim the Saints lead to 6-4 to set up a frantic finale. A fielder's choice and single put two runners aboard with one out in the top of the seventh. Saints catcher Casey Ward corralled an important out as she caught a foul ball right at the fence. A defensive miscue handed USI another run as the lead shank to just 6-5. However, Saints starter Sheridon Sprague induced a soft fly ball to shortstop that Flasch grabbed for the final out.

The victory was Maryville's second over a ranked Division II team this season, matching the Saints' win over #15 Winona State March 10. The Saints close the season 18-31 overall, 10-20 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The loss snaps Southern Indiana's winning streak at 13 games as USI is now 36-6 overall, 21-5 in the GLVC.
