Saints Sweep Road Doubleheader at Quincy 2-0 and 5-3

The Maryville softball team recorded an important road sweep as it took both ends of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Quincy. The Saints won game one 2-0 behind a four-hit shutout by Wendy Macias, and Maryville rallied to complete the doubleheader with a 5-3 triumph.

In the opener, Macias leadoff the top of the second inning with a solo home run and she made the run stand. Nikki Taylor lashed a double and came around to score on Sheridon Sprague#'s RBI single to close out the scoring. After giving up two hits in the first inning, Macias only surrendered two hits the rest of the way to post the shutout. She recorded two strikeouts in going the distance.

The Saints scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on a Krystal Rock RBI single before Quincy answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a home run. Maryville began its comeback with two runs in the top of the fifth. Rock and Darby Ferguson singled and came around to score after a Quincy error to forge a 3-3 tie. The Saints scored the eventual game winner in the sixth. Alex Flasch singled to start the winning sequence, moved to second on Brittany Casini's sac bunt and took third on a ground out. Ferguson then dropped in a single to right field for the 4-3 lead. The Saints added an insurance run in the seventh as Sprague's RBI fielder's choice plated Taylor for the final 5-3 margin.

The Saints improve to 10-21 overall, 6-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks fall to 14-17 overall, 6-10 in the league. Maryville closes out a two-day road trip with a doubleheader at Truman State Saturday.
