Saints and Southern Indiana Split Crucial Softball Series

In a meeting between two regionally-ranked teams, the visiting Maryville softball team earned a split at Southern Indiana Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind. The Saints took game one 4-2 but the Screaming Eagles prevailed 4-3 in eight innings in the finale.

In the opener, the Saints pushed across two runs in the top of the first. Nikki Taylor drew a walk, and Wendy Macias launched a homer for a 2-0 lead. The Screaming Eagles answered in the bottom of the frame and tied the game on a two-run double. Courtney Ferguson doubled to start the top of the third before Taylor's RBI knock provided the eventual game-winning run.

The Saints tacked on an important insurance run in the sixth. Macias singled and gave way to pinch runner Heather Wernle. Alex Flasch singled, and the duo moved up on a ground out. Sydney Halleen entered as a pinch hitter and came through with an RBI single for a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, USI got runners on the corners but Macias retired the final two batters to close out her 20th win of the season.

USI scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead in game two. The Saints earned one run back in the fourth as Darby Ferguson drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. Maryville took the lead in the top of the sixth as the Saints pushed across two unearned runs for a 3-2 edge. The Screaming Eagles tied the game in their next at-bat for a 3-3 deadlock.

In the top of the seventh, Macias walked and Ashley Marks doubled to put two runners in scoring position with one out. However, the Saints were unable to tack on the go-ahead run. The game moved to extra innings, and USI scored an unearned run in the bottom on a wild pitch to escape with a 4-3 victory.

The Saints are now 36-10 overall, 20-8 in the GLVC. The Screaming Eagles, who are sixth in the region, stand at 33-16, 21-7 in the league. Maryville closes the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader at Bellarmine starting at 11 a.m. CT / Noon ET.
