Softball Saints Drop Two at Bellarmine to Close Regular Season

The Maryville softball team closed out the most successful regular season in program history with a doubleheader at Bellarmine. However, for the first time all year, the Saints dropped both ends of a doubleheader as the Knights downed the Saints 4-0 and 9-0.

Bellarmine struck first with all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first. The Knights strung together four hits and pushed across three runs. Ashley Marks singled to leadoff the top of the third and advanced to second on Courtney Ferguson's sac bunt. Nikki Taylor drew a walk but the Saints were unable to bring home a run. In the fifth, Marks singled and reached third on a BU error but was thrown out at the plate trying to score. The Knights added an unearned run in the fifth. The Saints put two aboard in the top of the seventh but stranded two to end the game.

The Saints had a chance to jump ahead in the top of the second when Casey Ward was hit by  a pitch and Heather Wernle walked. However, the Maryville offense could not produce a two-out hit. Maryville fell behind in game two when the Knights hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second. The Saints only managed three hits in the contest as the Knights added runs in the final three innings.

Maryville ends the regular season at 36-12 overall, 20-10 in the GLVC. The Knights improved to 32-24 overall, 19-11 in the league. The Saints have clinched a berth in the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference and will begin action Friday, April 29, in East Peoria, Ill.
