St. Louis – The Maryville softball team earned a split on the diamond Sunday as the Saints defeated Missouri S&T 3-1, but then fell to Columbia College, 1-0 in the final game of the weekend at Weber Field.
The Saints got out to a fast start against as
Courtney Ferguson opened the first inning with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a
Nikki Taylor walk. Ferguson scored the first run of the game on a
Sam Hausl double down the left field line to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. The Saints added a second run in the inning as
Ashley Marks drew the third free pass of the inning to walk in a run and give Maryville a 2-0 advantage.
The Saints added an insurance run in the third as
Heather Wernle entered as a pinch-runner and scored on a
Bri Livingston sacrifice fly to give Maryville a 3-0 lead. The Miners plated a run in the sixth inning, but could get no closer as Saints pitcher
Alyssa Callans when the distance to claim her first win of the year.
Hausl paced the Saints offense going 2-for-3 with a run batted in while Ferguson was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the win.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Cougars used the long ball to grab a 1-0 advantage in the second inning. The Saints were only able to scratch out three hits in the game as Ferguson accounted for two of those hits. Taylor went the distance and suffered her second loss of the year.
Maryville continues their non-conference play on Saturday, Feb. 25, as the Saints travel to Jefferson City, Mo. to take on Lincoln University in a double header set to begin at 2 p.m.
