St. Louis - Washburn kept the Maryville softball bats in check to down the Saints in both ends of a doubleheader. The Ichabods took game one 3-0 and followed up with a 3-1 decision in the finale as Maryville recorded four hits in each game.
Â
In the opener, Erica Harper lashed a solo homer to left center for the only run Washburn would need. The Saints worked two walks in the bottom of the first but were unable to tie the game. The visitors tacked on a run in the second, and sealed the win with another single tally in the seventh. Maryville's best chance to score was in the sixth when
Ashley Marks walked and reached third on pinch hitter
Bri Livingston's infield single. However, Washburn worked out of the jam without giving up a run to the Saints.
Â
The second game followed a similar script as Washburn struck for a run in the top of the first.
Sheridon Sprague doubled in the second and
Casey Ward followed with a walk. Again, the Saints were stymied and could not get the tying run home. Washburn used two hits and took advantage of a Maryville miscue to add an unearned run in the fifth. The Ichabods closed their scoring with a single run in the top of the sixth. The Saints finally got on the board in their final at-bat when
Emily Frankenreiter launched a solo blast to left field but Maryville was unable to build on that momentum.
Â
The Saints saw their two-game winning streak come to an end and are 6-6 on the year. Washburn improves to 10-11 on the season. Maryville is next in action this weekend as they play in a tournament hosted by Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo.
