Boca Raton, Fla. – The Maryville softball team started their trip to Florida by being swept by Lynn University, 6-2 and 3-2 at Lynn University Softball Field in Boca Raton, Fla. Tuesday afternoon.
The Fighting Knights scored a run in the first and second inning before plating four more runs in the fifth inning to chase Saints starting pitcher
Nikki Taylor from the game and grab a 6-0 lead. Maryville did not go away quietly as the Saints started the top of the sixth inning with a
Casey Ward single through the left side and she moved to second as
Kelsey Martin drew a free pass.
Samantha Hausl came into the game to pinch run for Ward and was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice to keep runners at first and second. Both runners moved up after a pass ball and scored on an
Ashley Marks single to cut the Lions lead to 6-2. The Fighting Knights put the Saints down in order in the seventh inning to earn the win in the first game.
Taylor dropped to 4-5 on the year by going 4.1 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits. Marks went 2-for-3 in the game and drove in the only runs for Maryville. Ward added the Saints only other hit in the contest.
Lynn University scored a pair of runs in the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead. The game turned into a pitcher's duel until the seventh inning. The Saints tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the inning as Hausl singled up the middle to start the inning.
Emily Frankenreiter reached base on an error that moved
Bri Livingston, who came in to run for Hausl, over to second. Ward moved the runners over to second and third on a groundout to keep the rally alive. Livingston scored the Saints first run of the game after
Heather Wernle reached on a fielder's choice to cut the Fighting Knights lead to 2-1.
Jaclyn Pasakarnis came in off the bench to drive in Frankenreiter with a single and tie the contest at 2-2.
Lynn University took advantage of a Maryville error with two outs and then a pair of singles gave the Fighting Knights the win and dropped the Saints to 9-9 on the year.
Sprague suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the year while Frankenreiter was 1-for-2 on the afternoon while earning a walk and a run scored.
Maryville continues their spring break trip tomorrow, March 15, as the Saints travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to take on Nova Southeastern in a twinbill starting at 2 p.m. CST.
