Somers, Wis. – The Maryville softball team opened up a weekend road trip by earning a split with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, winning the first game, 4-1 and then dropping the night cap, 2-1 at the Case Complex in Somers, Wis. Friday afternoon.
The Saints took control of the first game of the road trip in the top of the first inning as
Courtney Ferguson drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ferguson came around to score on a
Nikki Taylor single to give Maryville an early 1-0 lead. The scoring continued for the Saints in the second as
Courtney Klosinski opened the second inning by getting hit by a pitch.
Emily Frankenreiter entered to pinch run for Klosinski and proceeded to steal second base and then moved to third on a ground out.
Kelsey Martin drove home Frankenreiter on a single to left field to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage.
Ferguson extended the Saints lead in the top of the third with her second home run of the year over the right field fence to give Maryville a 3-0 lead. The Rangers pushed across their only run in the third to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Saints gained an insurance run in the sixth as
Alyssa Callans walked and moved to second on a fielder's choice and then to third on a wild pitch. Callans then scored on a fly ball to right field to give the Saints a 4-1 lead.
Taylor improved her record to 8-5 on the year by giving up only one run on four hits while striking out three Ranger batters. Ferguson paced the Saints at the plate by going 1-for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The second game of the afternoon turned into a pitcher's duel as the Saints were only able to muster four hits in the contest. Taylor scored Maryville's only run with her fifth homer of the year to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Maryville held on to the lead until the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the sixth and they put the Saints down in order in the seventh to earn the series split.
Sheridon Sprague fell to 2-5 on the year in the loss as she scattered five hits with three strikeouts on the day. Taylor had two of the Maryville four hits in the game while Ferguson and
Jaclyn Pasakarnis had the other two hits for the Saints, who dropped to 14-12 and 4-2 in GLVC play.
