Saints Softball drops a pair to Truman State

Kirksville, Mo. – The Maryville softball team dropped both end of a doubleheader to Great Lakes Valley Conference foe, Truman State Sunday afternoon. The Saints fell in the opening game of the twin bill, 2-1 and then lost the night cap, 4-0 at the Truman Softball Park in Kirksville, Mo.

Courtney Ferguson opened the first game of the doubleheader with a bang as she launched her fourth home run of the year over the left field fence to give the Saints a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. The Bulldogs struck for a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take 2-1 lead.  Maryville had an opportunity in the sixth inning as Ferguson started the inning off with a single down the right field line and moved to second on a ground out. Nikki Taylor added a single and Samantha Hausl was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Bulldogs got out of the inning by getting a force out at second to end the Saints uprising.

Sheridon Sprague tossed 4.1 innings in the loss for the Saints while giving up four hits. Ferguson was 3-for-3 on the day with a run batted in as the Saints were held to five hits in the game.

The Bulldogs (28-16, 11-7 GLVC) took control of the nightcap with runs in the single runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. They extended the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to grab a 4-0 advantage as Truman State limited the Maryville attack to only four hits.

Alyssa Callans threw four innings while giving up a pair of runs on four hits as she fell to 4-4 on the season. Ferguson finished the afternoon by going 1-for-2 with a walk to pace the Saints as they fell to 17-21 and 7-11 in the GLVC.

The Saints return home to Weber Field on Friday, April 14, as Maryville will take on Drury University in a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
