Sprague and Callans Pace Saints in Sweep of UMSL

St. Louis –  The Maryville University softball team used both timely hitting and outstanding pitching to earn a sweep of the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday evening at Weber Field. The Saints pounded out 14 hits in the opener to defeat the Tritons 8-3 and then received an outstanding pitching performance by Alyssa Callans in the nightcap to earn a 1-0 victory.

Game One:
The Saints broke out to an early lead in the first inning as Jaclyn Pasakarnis drew a full count walk and moved to third on a Samantha Hausl double to left center. Starting pitcher Sheridon Sprague aided her own cause with a two-run single to give Maryville a 2-0 lead. The Tritons scored a pair in the second inning, but the Saints struck back in the third as Bri Livingston hit an RBI single to give Maryville a 3-2 advantage. After UMSL tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning, Maryville strung together five straight singles to score three runs and Sprague added her third RBI on the day with another single to give the Saints a 7-3 lead after four innings of play. The Tritons made a push in the top of the sixth inning with bases loaded and one out, but Sprague slammed the door on the uprising by forcing a pop up and getting a strike to keep the score at 7-3. Sprague added an insurance run in the home half of the inning by driving in her fourth run of the game to give Maryville an 8-3 lead.
