The Maryville women's lacrosse team took a two-goal lead at Lewis but the Flyers rallied to edge the Saints 8-7 in Romeoville, Ill., Saturday. The game was the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game for Maryville. Claire Martin paced the Saints with a hat trick, while Addison Devers finished with three points on two goals and an assist.
Lewis scored the first two goals but Martin got the Saints on the scoreboard eight minutes into the game. Devers tied the game at the 20:18 mark before the Flyers again edged ahead. Martin converted a man-up goal to forge a 3-3 tie but Lewis took a 4-3 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Bri Laster scored two straight goals to give Maryville its first lead of 5-4. Martin recorded her third goal on a free-position shot and a 6-4 advantage with 16:37 to play. However, Lewis went on a 4-0 run to jump ahead.
Devers scored with 21.7 seconds to play to bring the Saints to within one score. Kendall Werkmeister grabbed control of the final draw as Maryville had a chance to force overtime. However, the Saints were unable to find the late equalizer as Lewis held on for the victory.
The Saints slip to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the GLIAC. Four different players scored for Lewis which improved to 1-2 on the season, 1-0 in the conference. Maryville is back at home for its next contest Friday, March 15, against Indianapolis.
