Callans Twirls a No-Hitter to Aid Saints in Split With Parkside

St. Louis – Alyssa Callans fired the first no-hitter since 2016 in the opening game of the day to help the Maryville softball team earn a split in a doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon at the Maryville Athletic Complex. The Saints won the series opener 2-0 while the Rangers used a pair of two run innings to take the nightcap 4-1.

Game One:
The Saints jumped out in front in the bottom of the first as Hannah Tolley reached base on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Callans to make the score 1-0. Shaina Kmetz extended the Maryville lead in the home half of the second with a solo homer to left center field that put the Saints on top 2-0. That is all that the Saints would need as Callans fired the first Maryville no-hitter since Wendy Macias held Rockhurst hitless March 25, 2016. Callans struck out 10 Rangers in facing only three batters over the minimum to earn her first win of the season.

The Saints cut into the Parkside lead in the home half of the fifth as Tolley ripped a single to left field to drive in a run to make the score 2-1. The Rangers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1. Maryville had a chance in the bottom of the seventh as Lexi Touchette opened the inning with a double, but Parkside was able to get out of the inning with three consecutive outs to savage the doubleheader split.
