Heron Pitches a Two-Hit Shutout in Split with SBU

ROLLA, Mo. – Freshman pitcher Emersen Heron spun a two-hit shutout as the Saints took game two of a doubleheader 7-0 versus Southwest Baptist after dropping the opener 8-1. The games were played in Rolla, Missouri, and were rescheduled from an earlier date in the season.

Game one recap
The Saints fell behind 2-0 when the Bearcats scored twice in the bottom of the second. Maryville pushed across its lone run in the top of the third after Harrison reached on a bunt single and swiped second base. Taylor Duff then stepped up and hammered an RBI a double to left-center to pull the Saints to within a run.

SBU answered, however, with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Maryville bats were limited to just four hits in the game on their way to an 8-1 defeat in game one.

Duff dropped a single down the line in left for a quick 1-0 lead. Tori Forbeck entered as a pinch-runner and eventually stole third. Brooklyn Moore then singled home a run to put the Saints up 2-0. Callie Harrison doubled later to plate Moore for a 3-0 cushion.

Still up 3-0, Isabella Garcia singled to start the fifth and Melanie Nelson entered for her as a pinch-runner. After a Shingler sacrifice bunt, Duff singled up the middle for a 4-0 lead and later scored on an Erin Sammelmann single.

In the sixth, Melanie Nelson hit a leadoff single and stole two straight bases. Shingler followed up with an infield single to push the margin to 6-0. Later in the inning, Heron went to the opposite field for an RBI single scoring Shingler for the game's final run.
