Saints End UAH Charger Chillout with an 11-1 Win Over Ohio Dominican

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. – Maryville softball ended the Charger Chillout Tournament with a 1-1 Sunday afternoon, losing to Delta State University before taking down Ohio Dominican 11-1 to wrap up play in Albertville, Ala. 
 
Delta State Recap
Playing as the visitor, Delta State University opened up the first inning with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Melanie Nelson knotted the game at one in the bottom of the first with an infield single to bring home Emily Corona who led off with a walk. 
 
In the second, the Statesmen took a 9-1 lead scoring eight runs on seven hits. They added two more in the fourth to make it 12-1. 
 
The Saints were given an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth before freshman Kaitlyn Wagner drove home Tori Forbeck with an RBI groundout to cut the gap down to nine. 
 
After adding one more in the top of the fifth, Delta State wrapped up the game in the bottom half despite a Taylor Shingler double to left center field.

Ohio Dominican Recap
The Saints rebounded in the first inning of game two against Ohio Dominican with a trio of runs. Emily Corona singled to lead off the game and stole second base. Three batters later, Shinlger singled her home. Kylie Swinney later doubled to center field to plate Sammelmann and Shinlger to open up a 3-0 lead.
 
Emersen Heron and ODU starter Marlee Jacobs kept things quiet until the bottom of the third when the Panthers cut the lead to 3-1 on an infield single.
 
In the fifth, Heron helped her own cause with an RBI double and came home to score on Nelson's RBI triple. In the top of the sixth, Sammelmann singled home a pair of runs to kickstart a six-run frame for the Saints to extend the lead to 11-1. 
 
Heron finished off the short-game victory in the bottom half of the sixth, retiring three of the last four hitters. In total, the sophomore from Edmond, Okla., allowed one earned on six hits with six strikeouts over six innings.
