Oxford, Ohio -
Denise Van der Spuy scored three minutes into the game, and
Liz Bierhals posted a shutout as the Maryville field hockey team recorded a 3-0 victory over American International.
Delanie Winkelmann added a second score midway in the first quarter, and
Calista Crocker sealed the win in the fourth.
Van der Spuy collected a pass from Winkelmann and fired in a shot 3:02 into the game to put the Saints on top 1-0. The roles were reversed at the 9:15 mark when Van der Spuy fed Winkelmann, who scored in the season opener, and put the Saints ahead by two scores. AIC had its best chance off a penalty corner but Bierhals turned the shot aside. Maryville took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The Saint looked to put the game away in the fourth quarter but had three straight shots stopped. However, off a penalty corner,
Calista Crocker found the back of the net at the 52:10 mark that put the game out of reach.
The Saints (1-1) head to Wisconsin for their next two games. Maryville opens the trip with a game at Marian University Saturday, Sept. 9, in Fond du Lac, Wis.
