Field Hockey Takes Down DePauw 3-1 for First Victory of the Season

GREENCASTLE, IND. – Two goals in a decisive third quarter helped the Maryville field hockey team garner a 3-1 victory at DePauw. Calista Crocker tallied what would prove to be the eventual game-winning goal as the Saints claimed their first victory of the season. Grace Austin tallied the game's opening goal to get the Saints offense started.

How it Happened:
The Tigers had the first shot on goal but Megan Zalewski, making her first career start in goal, turned the attempt aside. The Saints pressed forward and earned the game's initial penalty corner. Charissa Van den Hoorn put an attempt towards the cage but the ball was deflected wide as the first quarter ended still scoreless.

DePauw had an excellent scoring chance early in the second but Zalewski came up with the stop. The Saints pushed the ball down the right side and Consuelo Torres Moore sent a ball across the Tigers goal mouth. Grace Austin collected the ball, spun around and tucked in a low shot to the right post to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play. Maryville nearly doubled its lead when Crocker's shot was stopped, and Eva Kriese's attempt just missed wide. Late in the second quarter, DePauw earned its first penalty corner and converted the chance as the game reached halftime tied at 1-1.

The Saints started the third quarter with a push and earned back-to-back penalty corners. On the second, the ball swung around to Ava Eiler, who dropped a pass off to Crocker who rifled in a stinging shot for a 2-1 lead just two minutes after halftime. The Saints added on when a ball came through traffic to the front of the DePauw goal. Denise Van der Spuy quickly pounced on the ball and slotted home a shot for a 3-1 advantage in the 37th minute. The Saints kept up the pressure when Addy Timm intercepted a pass and flicked a shot on goal that was saved. Maryville took the two-goal cushion into the final quarter. The Saints controlled the flow of play in the fourth quarter and did not allow a shot by DePauw as they closed out the win.

Maryville: 1-9
DePauw: 8-3
