ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Maryville field hockey team was looking to build a three-game winning streak, but Dominican converted a penalty corner in overtime to sneak past the Saints 3-2.
Â
How it Happened:
The Saints took the early lead on the first good scoring chance of the game.
Calista Crocker intercepted a clearing pass and pushed the ball to
Andra Alexander. She moved into the corner and centered the ball to
Consuelo Torres Moore who turned and fired a low shot into the cage for the 1-0 lead at the 9:08 mark. The Saints stayed in front well into the second quarter. It was then that Dominican picked up four straight penalty corners and eventually converted to tie the game before halftime.
Â
Maryville once again took advantage of a clearing pass by the Chargers, and it led to a
Denise Van der Spuy goal for a 2-1 lead in the final minute of the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Saints stopped back-to-back penalty corners by Dominican, but the Chargers converted on the third to tie the game at 2-2. Dominican nearly won the game late in the fourth but
Jojo Cox made her sixth save of the day as the game moved into overtime.
Â
However, in the extra session, the Chargers drew a penalty corner and converted the 4-on-3 chance with a low shot to the right post for the game winner at the 63:27 mark.
