WINGATE N.C. – The Maryville field hockey team closed out the season with a flourish as the Saints reached a season high in goals with a 5-1 triumph over Coker. The game was played at a neutral site on the campus of Wingate University, where the Saints won both of their contests this week.
Consuelo Torres Moore tallied two goals and tied the program record for goals in a season with 12.
Â
How it Happened:
Coker took the lead in the second quarter but Torres Moore fired in a rocket to tie the game.
Charissa Van den Hoorn fed
Addy Timm in traffic who turned and slotted home a low shot, her first career goal, to give the Saints the 2-1 lead at halftime.
Â
After a scoreless third, the Saints opened it up in the fourth to pull away. Off a penalty corner,
Denise Van der Spuy took a pass from
Ava Eiler and tucked the ball just inside the left post for a two-goal margin. Just over a minute later, the Saints drew a penalty stroke, and
Inke Nel converted high to the left side. Torres Moore put the game away in the 57th minute when she found the back of the net after a deft feed by
Cypress Guinn and a new season high with the fifth score of the day.
Â
Senior
Liz Hind started the game in goal and made one save, and fellow senior
Jojo Cox blanked the Cobras in the second half to pick up the victory as the duo made their final appearances in a Maryville jersey.
