Karlis Zirnis joined Maryville University in 2026 as Associate Coach for the University's NCAA Division I men's hockey program.
One of the most accomplished coaches in collegiate and international hockey, Zirnis brings nearly two decades of experience spanning NCAA Division I, junior hockey and international competition. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation as an elite teacher, recruiter and player developer.
Prior to joining Maryville, Zirnis most recently served as an assistant coach at Mercyhurst. His NCAA Division I coaching experience also includes stops at RPI, Alabama Huntsville and Alaska, where he helped develop student-athletes on and off the ice.
Before returning to the collegiate ranks, Zirnis served as head coach of the Shreveport Mudbugs, leading the organization to the 2018 Robertson Cup National Championship while earning NAHL South Division Coach of the Year honors.
Internationally, Zirnis has represented Latvia as both a player and coach. Since joining the Latvian National Team coaching staff in 2012, he has coached at the Winter Olympic Games, IIHF World Championships and multiple IIHF World Junior Championships, providing him with experience at the highest levels of the sport.
As a player, the Riga, Latvia native starred at Alabama Huntsville, finishing second in the program's modern NCAA Division I era in career points (119) and assists (73).
