Prior to UNC-Charlotte, Hurley was the graduate assistant softball coach at Augusta State for two years. During her time with the Jaguars, she coordinated the team's travel and conditioning program and also worked with the catchers and outfielders.

She was a four-year starter at the University of Akron where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science in 2003. Hurley earned All-Mid America conference honors in 2002 and finished among the nation's leaders in doubles. She earned a master's degree in health science and physical education from Augusta State in 2005.
