Miller's Free Throws Seal Win Over William Jewell

Freshman Shelby Miller hit two free throws with 6.2 seconds left to cap a frantic final minute and preserve a 64-60 win for Maryville over William Jewell in a Great Lakes Valley Conference thriller Saturday afternoon in Moloney Arena. The victory enabled the Saints to remain perfect at home this season at 8-0.

The Saints were down by one until Miller drilled a 3-pointer from the right side to build a 56-54 lead at the 1:58 mark. William Jewell answered with layup by Cassy Nicolay to tie the game at 56-56. With 1:23 left to play in the contest, Abby Duethman sank a 3-pointer from the left corner to put the Saints on top 59-56. William Jewell’s Cassy Nicolay converted two free throws to bring the Cardinals to within one. Miller drove the right baseline and sank a layup in traffic for a 61-58 Maryville lead with 49 ticks left. WJU drew a foul and Holly Switzer made both to draw the visitors to 61-60. The Saints had a chance to extend the lead, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Miller stole the ball and sank two from the line with 6.2 remaining for a 63-60 lead. As William Jewell inbounded the ball but called a timeout which it did not have. Miller sank one free throw with less than one second left in the game for the final victory margin. The score was close throughout the second half and neither team led by more than five points. The game featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties.

Duethman and Alissa Oney led the Saints with 13 points apiece. Miller added 11 while Kate Childs had 10. JoAnn Thompson had a tremendous all-around game with eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Kaylyn Wood led WJU with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Saints win their third straight and improve to 9-8 overall, 5-4 in the GLVC and snap William Jewell’s five-game winning streak as the Cardinals fall to 11-4, 6-3 in the conference.
