Maryville peppered the Illinois Springfield net with 17 shots, including eight on target but was unable to find the back of the net as the visiting Prairie Stars escaped with a 1-0 win in St. Louis. UIS scored the game’s only goal early in the second half.

The Saints had good scoring chances in the first half and drilled an attempt off the crossbar midway through the opening 45 minutes. However, the Prairie Stars keeper Cole Wardlow kept the Saints at bay. Early in the second half, UIS’ Mark Williams received a pass from Mark Czary from the left side and headed in the ball at the 53:20 mark.

The Saints (3-14, 3-11 GLVC) pressed forward but was unable to level the score as the Prairie Stars prevailed. Matt Bearley led Maryville with three shots on goal. Wardlow made eight saves on the day to post the shutout for UIS (3-14, 2-12).

The Saints close out the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 24, as they travel to Missouri-St. Louis.
