Lewis’ Julian Montiel took advantage of a fortuitous bounce in the final minute as the Flyers handed Maryville a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon.
The Flyers sent in a long cross from the left that bounded off a Maryville defender and straight out to Montiel. He settled the ball and slotted in a shot from five yards away as the Flyers finally put a ball into the Maryville net. Lewis put nine shots on goal but Saints keeper
Kyle Leveling made seven stops and the Maryville defense also cleared a ball off the line as they kept the visitors off the board for 89 minutes.
The Flyers had the run of play early and had three strong scoring chances in the first half. Lewis twice hit the crossbar, and
Thomas Woelfel blocked a shot that was on target. Maryville’s best scoring chance was off a corner kick when
Nate Alonzo’s long shot was tipped over the net by Alec Pickett. In the final minute of the half, Lewis again had a shot clang off the crossbar as the game was tied at half.
Midway through the second half, the Flyers had another shot deflect off the woodwork as the score remained 0-0.
JT File rose up and flicked on a header that just rolled wide of the Lewis net setting the stage for the late Lewis game winner.
The Saints slide to 2-11 overall, 2-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers improve to 5-7 overall, 5-5 in the GLVC.
