Asa Toney recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Maryville men’s basketball team reached a season high in scoring in an 86-54 romp past Missouri Baptist Monday evening in Moloney Arena. The double-double was the first by a Saints player since Feb. 13, 2010.
The Saints trailed 5-4 before reeling off 16 straight points over a five-minute span. Toney sparked the run with a 3-pointer, and
Armon Provo followed with another trey.
Gerald Shaw converted a bucket in transition and added two free throws on Maryville’s next possession. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Toney and
Derek Deters built a 20-5 lead for the Saints. Maryville still led 30-15 before stretching the edge to 22 points. After another Toney trey and a layup by
Adam Whitlock, Provo sank two free throws as the Saints took their biggest lead of the first half at 37-15.
In the second half, the Saints still held a 45-28 lead before sealing the victory with a 12-1 run. Toney scored a hoop inside, Provo tallied in the lane, and Toney sank a 3-pointer. After the Spartans hit one free throw,
Max Mischkulnig converted two free throws, Toney added one from the line, and Mischkulnig’s short jumper built a 57-29 cushion. The Saints led by as much as 35 points as they cruised to their ninth victory of the season.
Toney hit 7-of-9 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, en route to his first career double-double. Shaw added 18 points, and Provo provided 15 points and a career-best eight assists. Adam Whitlock came off the bench to score 10 points. Matthew Holmes led Missouri Baptist (5-8) with 17 points. The Saints shot 57.4 percent from the field, their second-highest mark of the season, trailing only the school-record 72.7 percentage against Lincoln Nov. 26.
