Visiting Missouri S&T shot 66.7 percent in the game and held off a late Maryville charge to post an 85-75 victory over the Saints Saturday afternoon in Moloney Arena. The Saints took care of the ball and committed only five turnovers in the contest as the Miners did not register a steal.
The Miners took an early 8-2 lead before the Saints scored eight straight to take their first lead of the game. Mike Ford hit a 3-pointer, and
Gerald Shaw added a three-point play to tie the contest. Corey Washburn scored inside to push Maryville on top 10-8. The game stayed close and had three more ties before Washburn’s two free throws gave the Saints a 19-18 lead. Missouri S&T pieced together a 12-2 run to go up 30-21.
Asa Toney hit two free throws as Maryville closed to 32-26 with just over five minutes left in the half, but the Miners heated up from the field and took a 45-32 lead at the break.
The Miners built a 48-32 lead but the Saints edged back into the game. Maryville closed to 54-41 before ripping off eight straight points. Ryan Shotkoski scored on a reverse layup, and Shaw had another 3-point play. After the Maryville defense forced a turnover, Shaw’s 3-pointer drew the Saints to 54-49 with 14 minutes left to play. Missouri S&T tallied five straight to rebuild a double-digit lead but the Saints would not allow them to pull away. Washburn hit a 3-pointer to pull Maryville to 80-73 in the final minute but the Miners (5-18 overall, 4-11 GLVC) hit three of four free throws and held on for their second straight win.
Toney had 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists to lead the Saints attack. Shaw added 15 points, while Washburn tied his career high of 13 points. Bryce Roster led Missouri S&T with 26 points and completed a double-double with 12 rebounds.
The Saints fall to 12-11 overall, 5-10 in the GLVC. Maryville hosts its final regular-season home game Thursday, Feb. 16, when Illinois-Springfield comes to town.
