Maryville used explosive runs to open each half and set a season high for points in an 84-49 triumph over Oakland City in a nonconference game at Moloney Arena. The Saints started the game with a 13-1 burst and opened the second half with 13 straight points en route to 51 second-half points. Maryville finished with 28 assists, the most in a game since Dec. 11, 2004.

Mike Ford was fouled on the first possession of the game and hit two free throws to start the first early run for the Saints. Asa Toney drilled a 3-pointer before Oakland City got on the scoreboard with one free throw. Toney tacked on another trey, and he dished to Corey Washburn for a layup. Gerald Shaw sank a 3-pointer from the corner as the Saints surged to a 13-1 lead just 3:50 into the game.

After the Maryville defense forced seven straight missed shots to open the game, the Mighty Oaks finally converted from the field. OCU closed to 14-6 but Toney drained his third 3-pointer of the game, and Armon Provo had a steal and layup for a 19-6 lead. The Saints led by as many as 15 points at 26-11 before OCU drew to 33-25 at halftime.

To start the second half, the Saints found their touch from the far left corner as they drained three straight 3-pointers from that spot. Ford started the run, and Shaw hit two straight from beyond the arc for a 42-25 advantage at the 18:38 mark. Washburn scored on a backdoor cut, and Provo’s end-to-end drive built a 46-25 lead.

The Saints held a 51-32 lead and tacked on a 9-2 burst to take control at 60-34 with just under 12 minutes to play. Maryville stretched its advantage to as much as 39 and eased to its second straight win to improve to 11-10 on the year. The Saints shot 31-of-59 (52.5 percent) from the field.

Shaw hit 5-of-7 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and finished with 14 points. Trae Pemberton scored a career-high 13, while Corey Washburn added 12 points. Jacob Dulle grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.  Toney dished out a career-high eight assists while adding nine points and six rebounds. Eric Head led Oakland City (15-7) with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Saints return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Thursday, Feb. 9, when they host Drury at 7:30 p.m.
