Maryville traveled to Missouri Valley College Sunday, Feb. 5, to compete in the Missouri Valley Open. The Saints did not bring their varsity wrestlers because of multiple dual matches this upcoming week.
Freshman Dimitri Willis (165 lb.) placed fifth overall with an impressive performance. Willis would have received the most falls award if it was given at this tournament with a total of three falls. Willis finished with an overall record of 4-2 and pinned Ty Prazma of University of Missouri to whom he previously lost earlier this year.
Matt Spain (HWT) took home sixth overall place with a 2-3 record. This is Spain’s second consecutive placing in tournaments since returning from illness. Spain also beat Gabi Musallam of Missouri Valley College who he previously had lost to.
Joining Willis and Spain as wrestlers of the week was Christian Lodges (165 lb.) and Morgan Denson (HWT). Lodges may have had his most impressive performance of his season finishing 2-2 and beating Colton Schmitz of Truman State who defeated the freshman earlier this season. Denson finished 3-2, recording one fall and two decisions.
The Saints wrestling team travels to Lebanon, Ill., to face McKendree in its third dual of the season. Action will begin at 7pm and will be livestreamed through the Maryville Wrestling Facebook page and Livestream.com/maryvillewrestling.
