FOR OPENERS:
Maryville opens its men's soccer season Friday, Aug. 31, versus Lake Erie College. Game time at Maryville Soccer Field is 4 p.m. The game has been designated as “Fill the Hill”, and is the first official home event of Maryville’s 2012-13 academic year. There is no admission charge to attend Maryville soccer games. The Saints are back in action Sunday, Sept. 2, when they host Northeastern State for a noon contest.
MORE ON MARYVILLE:
Maryville returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad which posted a 4-12-1 mark, 3-10-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints bolstered the roster with 17 newcomers, including 15 freshmen.
Nick Doherty leads all returning players with four goals and three assists for 11 points.
Matt Bearley added three goals and one assist for seven points last season.
ABOUT LAKE ERIE:
Lake Erie College, which is located in Painesville, Ohio, was 8-9-3 a year ago. Nathan Bias leads all Storm returners with five goals and two assists.
ABOUT NORTHEASTERN STATE:
The Riverhawks finished last season with a 9-6-3 mark, including an impressive 7-0-1 start to the 2011 season. NSU received votes in the preseason NSCAA poll and were picked to finish second in the MIAA. Henry Wildenborg and Juan Peralta lead all returners with four goals apiece. Jordan Ladbrooke returns in the nets after posting eight wins and a 1.12 GAA.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Saints make the short trip to St. Charles, Mo., to face Lindenwood Tuesday, Sept. 4, for its final non-conference game. Maryville hosts McKendree in the GLVC opener Friday, Sept. 7, in a 2:30 p.m. game. The Saints welcome Bellarmine Sunday, Sept. 9, for a 2:30 contest.
