Lake Erie Edges Past Saints in Double Overtime

Box Score PDF of Lake Erie boxscore

It might have been appropriate that the Maryville men’s soccer team was hosting Lake Erie College – LEC’s nickname is the “Storm.” During a driving rain storm due to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac, Lake Erie scored in the waning moments of double overtime to post a 1-0 win in the season opener for both squads.

In approximately the 109th minute, James Grogan collected a pass on the left side of the Maryville goalmouth. He fired a hard shot which Saints keeper James Hohenstein dove to keep out of the net. However, the rebound bounced to Cory Bucur and he slid the ball into the right side for the game winner.

Due to the heavy rain, the game was moved to the turf surface at Scott Gallagher Field in Maryland Heights, Mo. Neither team generated great scoring changes, but both goalies kept the game scoreless into overtime.

The Saints are back in action Sunday, Sept. 2, when they host Northeastern State of Oklahoma in a game that will be played at Parkway Central High School. Game time is Noon.
