Maryville’s men’s soccer team was bidding for its second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference road win, but Southern Indiana tallied two goals in the second half to post a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon in Evansville, Ind.

The Screaming Eagles nearly took the lead in the 11th minute when they hit the post but the ball bounced away as the game remained scoreless. Gus Reinitz, who scored twice in Maryville’s last outing, just missed wide in the 14th minute of action. The Saints earned two corner kicks in the rest of the half but neither team could net a goal.

Just 64 seconds into the second half, USI earned a penalty kick but the shot from the spot missed wide as the game stayed scoreless. However, at the 54:31 mark, the Eagles finally put one into the Saints’ net as Ryan Moll scored the eventual game winner. USI extended its lead with another goal in the 78th minute. Aaron Woods nearly answered for the Saints but USI held on for the win.

The Saints fall to 2-5-0 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC. Southern Indiana ups its mark to 3-3, 3-1 in the conference. Maryville is back in action at home Friday against William Jewell.
