Austin Tierney tapped in a long cross from the right wing by Mark Magee as No. 5 Rockhurst dodged an upset bid by Maryville in Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s soccer on a sunny Sunday in St. Louis.

In the 13th minute, Matt Bearley had the first good scoring chance for the Saints, but his attempt was saved by Hawks keeper Ryan Bass. Rockhurst then nearly scored as a shot was headed towards the Saints net but was cleared off the line. The Hawks pressured the Maryville cage late in the first half but the Saints defense stood tall, including four saves by Maryville keeper James Hohenstein, for a 0-0 score after the first half.

The Saints took an early turn to apply pressure in the second half and earned three straight corners but was unable to find the cage. Law Duncan tested Bass but the game remained scoreless until the Hawks struck at the 57:46 mark. Magee received a pass and dribbled into the far right corner then lofted a cross to the far post that Tierney tapped in for the winner. Rockhurst pressed to double its lead but Hohenstein kept the Hawks out of the net. In the final five minutes, Gus Reinitz’s shot went high, and Zach Bavol’s chance from a steep angle on the left missed wide.

Hohenstein turned away nine shots to keep the Saints (2-7, 2-4 GLVC) within striking distance the entire day. The Hawks improve to 6-1-1 overall, 5-1 in the conference.
