Busy Week Ahead for Men’s Soccer with Three Games

THIS WEEK:
The Maryville men's soccer team has a busy week with three contests in six days. The Saints make the short trip to St. Charles, Mo., to take on Lindenwood in an 8 p.m. game Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Hunter Stadium. Maryville begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday, Sept. 7, when McKendree makes its conference debut in a 2:30 p.m. tilt. The Saints close out the week Sunday, Sept. 9, when they take on Bellarmine in a 2:30 p.m. match.
 
MORE ON MARYVILLE:
Maryville returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad which posted a 4-12-1 mark, 3-10-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints bolstered the roster with 17 newcomers, including 15 freshmen. Nick Doherty leads all returning players with four goals and three assists for 11 points. James Hohenstein has been strong in the nets allowing just two goals in the first two games this season.
 
ABOUT LINDENWOOD:
After playing two double overtime games, the Lions are also seeking their first win of the season. Lindenwood tied Quincy in its opener then fell in double OT to Quincy. Hrvoje Bagaric scored LU’s lone goal this season, while Fermin Hughes has allowed just two goals and has a 0.84 GAA.
 
ABOUT McKENDREE:
The Bearcats are in their first year as GLVC members and opened the season with a 4-1 win over Madonna. McKendree plays Davenport before coming to St. Louis. Alex Ridsdale leads the Bearcats with one goal and two assists.
 
ABOUT BELLARMINE:
The Knights defeated Urbana 4-1 to open the season before getting edged 2-1 by Ohio Dominican. BU plays UMSL Friday before coming to Maryville Sunday. Connor Brehm has two scores on the year to lead the team, and Blake Hunter has seven saves to go along with a 1.00 GAA.
 
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Saints dropped two heartbreakers to open the season. In a driving rainstorm, Lake Erie scored with less than two minutes remaining in double overtime to earn a 1-0 win in the opener. Northeastern (Okla.) State then handed the Saints another late setback with a goal inside the final four minutes of play in another 1-0 defeat.
 
LOOKING AHEAD:
Maryville heads on the road for two GLVC contests. The Saints play at Kentucky Wesleyan Friday, Sept. 14, and then face Southern Indiana Sunday, Sept. 16.
