Maryville’s
Matt Bearley's goal three minutes after McKendree tied the game proved to be the game winner as the Saints downed McKendree 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
The Saints carried the early play and were rewarded in the ninth minute.
Alex Brown fed a ball to
Nick Doherty who settled the ball and hit a cutback shot to the middle of the goal for a 1-0 Maryville lead. Six minutes later, Bearley nearly put the Saints up 2-0 when his shot was saved by McKendree keeper Scott Armistead. The Bearcats tested Maryville goalie
James Hohenstein but he came up with two consecutive saves as the Saints took a 1-0 lead at halftime.
At the 52:43 mark, the Bearcats drew even on Dominic Plant’s goal. The Saints showed great resolve and bounced right back to retake the lead in the 56th minute. After a long pass led to scramble to the left of McKendree’s goal, Bearley collected a blocked shot, slid the ball under the keeper and inside the post for a 2-1 Saints lead.
The Saints defense made the lead stand up to pick their first win in conference and overall. Maryville moves to 1-3 on the season, 1-0 in the GLVC. The Bearcats suffer their first loss and fall to 2-1 overall, 0-1 in the league. Maryville is back in conference action Sunday as it hosts Bellarmine for a 2:30 p.m. game
