Saints Host UMSL on Senior Night; Five Will be Honored Before Game

THIS WEEK
The Maryville women’s basketball squad (16-9, 12-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) plays its final regular-season game Thursday, Feb. 28, as crosstown rival Missouri-St. Louis visits Moloney Arena for a 5:15 p.m. game. Seniors Kate Childs, Abby Duethman, Brittnye McSparron, Angela Pepowski and Kayla Person will be honored before the game.
                                  
ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS
The Tritons are 15-10, 10-7 in the GLVC under first-year head coach Katie Vaughn. Devonna Smith paces UMSL with 13.5 ppg and is second in the league with 9.8 rpg. Hazaria Washington adds 9.2 ppg and 6.9 rpg. Angela Johnson also scores 9.2 ppg, while Kelly McGovern has dished out 101 assists to go along with 43 steals. The Tritons lead the conference in offensive rebounding at 14.5 per game. The Saints won the first meeting 73-64 Dec. 5, 2012 at UMSL.
 
THE DEACONESS HOSPITAL GLVC TOURNAMENT
The Saints have clinched the No. 2 seed for the Deaconess Hospital GLVC Tournament hosted at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., March 8-10. Maryville is the reigning GLVC Tournament champion. In 2012, the Saints won four tournament games to claim the title and the school’s first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance.

LAST WEEK
Shelby Miller drained four 3-pointers and the Saints knocked down 10 treys in a 66-50 win at Illinois Springfield. Kate Childs scored a season-high 18 points, and Brittnye McSparron added 17 points as Maryville cruised past Quincy 86-63.

MORE ON MARYVILLE
Senior guard Brittnye McSparron leads the team with 11.7 ppg along with 57 assists. Sophomore guard Shelby Miller has hit 57 3-pointers and is averaging 11.3 ppg. The Saints are second in the league in scoring defense at 57.1 ppg, scoring margin at +11.2, field goal percentage defense at .357 and third in steals at 10.0.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Saints have earned a bye into the quarterfinals of the 2013 Deaconess Hospital GLVC Tournament and will be the No. 2 seed. After the opening round tournament games are played, Maryville will face the second-lowest advancing team in the quarterfinals Friday, March 8, in Evansville, Ind.
