Quincy's Pete Condol scored three minutes into overtime on a rebound to boost the Hawks past Maryville 1-0 in the home opener for the Saints men's soccer team Sunday afternoon. Just prior to the winner, the Saints nearly scored the winning goal when Lance Kohler fired a shot that was heading towards the right side of the QU net, but Drew Duncan pushed the ball wide.

In the first half, after the Saints had earned a corner, Kory Clawson's header struck the crossbar in the sixth minute. The Hawks had two good scoring chances midway through the half but Maryville keeper Josh Richter kept the game scoreless.

The Saints best sustained pressure happened 15 minutes after the halftime break. Maryville earned a corner before Michael Scharf's shot was blocked as it was heading towards the QU net. The Saints dug in for another corner kick and Colby Gumm's blast was stopped by QU's Duncan. The Hawks nearly scored in the 74th minute on a shot from Ethan Venvertloh, but Richter tipped the ball over the bar. Maryville earned its sixth corner kick of the half but could not produce the go-ahead goal. The contest moved to overtime before the visitors tallied the winner. Venvertloh put a shot on goal that Richter saved but the rebound fell to Condol who tucked the ball into the rightside.

Both goalies played well to stymie the opposing attack. Richter registered six saves in the game, while Duncan made four saves for the visitors.

The Saints are now 0-3 overall, 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks improve to 3-1, 2-0 in the GLVC. Maryville is next in action Friday as Indianapolis visits for league play.
