Â
The Saints started quickly and turned a 4-3 deficit into a double-digit lead.
Samantha Robison scored consecutive baskets to give Maryville a lead it would not surrender the rest of the game. Hillyer scored on a jumper, and Robison drained a 3-pointer. After Rockhurst recorded a three-point play,
Joann Thompson nailed a trey, and Hillyer sank two free throws for a 17-7 edge five minutes into the game.
Â
Later in the first half, the Saints stretched a 23-13 lead to as much as 19 points with a 12-3 burst.
Jordynn Martin hit two free throws, and
Erica Lorton scored on a drive inside. After a Rockhurst basket, Hillyer converted from 3-point range.
Shelby Miller hit a 3-pointer, and an bucket inside from Hillyer pushed the margin to 35-16. Rockhurst cut into the lead, and the Saints settled for a 39-28 lead at halftime.
Â
Maryville rebuilt a 49-34 lead five minutes to the second half on a Miller 3-pointer, but the Hawks went on a 13-5 spree and sliced the deficit to just seven. Hillyer ended the run with two free throws, and a
Brittany Fish 3-pointer handed the Saints a 59-47 lead with 11 minutes to go. The Hawks whittled away and drew as close as 66-60 but a Robison triple was good for a 69-60 lead and the Saints led by double figures for good on a Flynn jumper with just under three minutes to play.
Â
Flynn's double-double was her first since posting 15 point and 10 rebounds at Kentucky Wesleyan Jan. 3, 2013. Hillyer added six rebounds to her team-high 16 points, while Miller and Robison both had 15 points apiece. Martin was the fifth Saint to score in double figures and notched 11 points. Kendall Hart topped Rockhurst (6-12, 1-9) with 19 points, while Lauren Meyers added 18.
Â
The Saints improve to 11-8 overall, 4-5 in the GLVC. Maryville hosts William Jewell Saturday, Feb. 1, in a 1 p.m. start at Moloney Arena.
