Kansas City, Mo. - The Maryville volleyball team challenged one of the top teams in the Great Lake Valley Conference but was on the short end of a 25-17, 25-20, 25-13 decision at Rockhurst Saturday afternoon. Laura Welling tied her season high with 12 kills to pace both teams.
 
The Saints were down 11-10 in the opening set before roaring ahead. Welling's kill tied the set, and she and Maddie Timmermann combined on a block and a 12-11 Saints' lead. Hannah Seitter's service ace built Maryville a 13-11 edge. A Timmermann kill kept the Saints on top 14-12 until the Hawks took the lead for good with four straight points.
 
The Saints were down 7-6 before taking their first lead of the second set with a 3-0 run. Michael's kill tied the set, and a setting error pushed Maryville ahead. A Rockhurst hitting miscue built the Saints a 9-7 edge. Maryville still held a 13-12 lead after a Timmermann kill before the Hawks tallied three of the next four points to take back the lead and took a 2-0 lead. The Saints hit a match-high .344 in the set.
 
Taryn Trubich tipped in a kill as the Saints pulled to within 4-3 in the third set but the Hawks scored four straight to rebuild control. Timmermann's kill kept the Saints close at 12-7 but the Hawks used an 8-2 run to hold off the Saints.

In addition to her team-high 12 kills, Welling hit .304 in the contest. Timmermann added seven kills, while Ashley Selman finished with six. Michael recorded a team-high 12 digs.  Rockhurst (15-2, 9-2) hit .341 as a team, the best mark by a Maryville opponent this season.

The Saints fall to 9-8, 5-6 in the GLVC. Maryville is next in action at at Princpia Tuesday, Oct. 14.
