Normandy, Mo. - The Maryville men's soccer team was looking to close the season with two straight wins but the University of Missouri-St. Louis posted a 3-0 victory in the St. Louis derby at Don Dallas Field between the two Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents. The Saints finish the 2014 season with a mark of 5-9-4 overall, 4-9-2 in the GLVC.
Â
The Saints nearly took the early lead when
Kory Clawson twice hit the crossbar. He rang a shot off the bar in the 12th minute and rattled the woodwork less than 60 seconds later. After
Nick Doherty had a shot blocked, the Tritons struck for the only goal they would need.
Gus Reinitz nearly pulled the Saints even midway through the half but his shot was saved by UMSL goalie Nick Lenkman.
Michael Scharf had a late shot turned aside late in the first half as UMSL settled for the 1-0 lead.
Â
The hosts doubled their lead in the 57th minute on a scramble after a corner kick. Reinitz's attempt just missed wide before the Tritons sealed the win with a final tally in the 65th minute of action. The Saints made a late push to get on the scoreboard with five shots, however, none found the back of the net as the Tritons (12-3-2, 11-3-1) held on for the victory.
