Lincoln Slips Past Saints 58-51 in Women's Basketball Action

For the second straight outing, the Maryville women's basketball team saw an opponent overcome a late lead to hand the Saints a defeat. Lincoln rallied for a 58-51 win over Maryville Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building on the campus of UMSL.

Holding a 19-16 lead midway through the first half, the Saints scored nine straight points. Alex Hillyer hit a layup to start the run, and Jordynn Martin converted two free throws. Shelby Miller drained a 3-pointer, and Ali Ringering's jumper closed the burst for a 28-16 edge. Two Alex Wolf charity tosses were good for a 30-18 lead before the Blue Tigers scored the final seven points of the half. The Saints settled for a 30-25 lead at intermission.

The Blue Tigers surged at the start of the second half and whittled away at the Maryville lead. Lincoln tied the game at 39-all. The game was still deadlocked at 41-41 until the Saints scored eight consecutive points. Ringering connected on a jumper, and Miller hit two free throws. After a Martin bucket, Miller's midrange jumper was good for a 49-41 cushion with 6:36 to play. However, the Saints offense went into a drought as the Blue Tigers scored 12 straight points to take a 53-49 lead. Wolf made one free throw with 1:33 remaining to trim the deficit to three, but Lincoln scored a layup on its next possession and hit three of four at the line to hold the Saints at bay.

Martin paced the Saints (1-2) in scoring with 17 points, while Wolf yanked down 12 rebounds. The Saints outrebounded the Blue Tigers by 10 boards but hurt themselves with 20 turnovers. Hunter Yoakum led Lincoln with 14 points, and Lizzie Nessling finished with 11 boards.

The Saints are next in action Friday, Nov. 28, as they face Lyons College in a tournament hosted by Missouri Western.
