Quincy, Ill. - The Maryville volleyball team closed out the 2014 season with a narrow five-set loss at Quincy by the scores of 25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 16-25, 13-15. The Saints finish with a record of 15-14 overall, 6-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The win total is the most since the 1999 team recorded 18 victories, while the seven league triumphs are the most since Maryville joined the GLVC.
The Saints were down 16-15 before storming ahead with five straight points in the opening set. Grace Balcerak had a kill to start the run, and Maddie Timmermann and Laura Welling had a block to push the Saints ahead 17-16. Welling had two more kills sandwiched around a QU error for a 20-16 cushion. Ashley Selman's kill closed out the 25-20 win.
In set two, a Welling kill handed the Saints a 7-4 edge before the Hawks tied the score at 7-7. The score was tied seven more times until Quincy build an 18-15 lead. The Saints were still down 20-17 before knotting the game at 20-all. The set was tied at 22-22 before the Hawks scored three straight to win the set.
The third set was close through out and was deadlocked at 22-22. Quincy scored two straight for a 24-22 lead before the Saints roared back with four straight points. Maryville took advantage of four consecutive Quincy errors to comeback for a 26-24 win. Quincy used an early 5-0 burst in set four to establish a 7-2 lead. The Saints were still trailing 9-5 until the Hawks scored four straight to effectively take control of the set. Kills by Timmermann and Selman bookended two QU errors as the Saints cut the deficit to 13-9. Quincy scored five of the next six points and eventually forced a fifth set.
In the deciding set, Maryville broke away from a 5-5 tie with three straight points. After a QU hitting error, Timmermann finished a kill, and a another error by the Hawks handed the Saints an 8-5 margin. The teams traded service errors but the Saint were still leading 10-8. Quincy forced a tie at 10-10 until another Selman kill put the Saints ahead 11-10. The hosts answered with three straight points to move to a 13-11 lead. Selman again had a kill to answer but a QU kill pulled the Hawks to match point. The Saints saved one but a kill by Bekah Rebel ended the match for Quincy.
Selman led the Saints with 15 kills while hitting .342 to go along with five blocks. Welling added 12 kills to the attack. Ali Lampen dug up 34 shots, and Hana Michael finished with 23 digs. Taryn Trubich handed out 30 assists for Maryville.Â
