Max Mischkulnig's first career double-double, the Maryville men's basketball team dropped a 79-69 decision to visiting Robert Morris-Springfield on the inaugural Saints Silent Night promotion. Mischkulnig reached career highs with 16 points and 12 rebounds while tying his career best with four blocked shots but could not prevent the Saints from their first home loss of the season.
The game was tied at 17-17 midway through the first half when
Armon Provo drilled a 3-pointer to push the Saints ahead. After RMU scored on a layup,
Damyan Stoyanov scored off an offensive rebound and putback. Provo sank another trey as the Saints took their largest leaf of the night at 25-19 with just under six minutes left in the first half. The Eagles made back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game.
Neither team led by more than one point and RMU was still up one in the final seconds of the half. However, Mischkulnig hit a jumper, and after the Saints forced a turnover with 2.4 second left,
Josh Montague threw a long pass to the opposite free-throw line, Mischkulnig caught the pass, turned and banked in a shot at the buzzer for a 37-34 Maryville lead.
Montague scored on the first possession of the second half to put the Saints up by five, 39-34. The Eagles scored six straight to retake the lead but a hoop by Mischkulnig and a three-point sequence by
Saikou Jallow provided a 44-40 lead with 17:12 to play. However, the Saints saw RMU tally 10 straight to grab the lead.
Trae Pemberton's layup ended the Saints dry spell at the 14 minute mark. The Eagles were still up by six until Evan Booker scored inside, and Stoyanov's layup cut the deficit to 52-50. RMU scored eight of the next 10 points to rebuild its margin, and the Saints were never able to get any closer than six points.
Mischkulnig had six rebounds on both the offensive and defensive end for the Saints. Pemberton finished with 14 points, while Provo chipped in 13 points. The Saints shot 25-of-50 from the field but RMU (4-4) made 50.9 percent as Robert Calmese scored a game-high 25 points.
The Saints even their record at 3-3.
Derek Deters scored the 10th point of the game for the Saints on a 3-pointer to break the silence of "Silent Night." Maryville is back in action next Saturday as it hosts Lindenwood for a 3 p.m. game.
