2014 Super Regional Team Standings
Tiffin, Ohio - Capped by redshirt freshman Donnell Walker's championship in the heavyweight division, the No. 13 Maryville Saints went a perfect 7-for-7 on day two of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Super Regional and advanced seven wrestlers to the National Championship Tournament March 14-15 in Cleveland, Ohio. The seven national qualifiers surpass the total of six Maryville sent the first two years of the program. As a team, the Saints scored 99 points to finish fifth in the 17-team regional field.
"We felt like it was a significant step for our program to qualify seven of our wrestlers for the National Tournament," Saints head coach Mike Denney said. "We qualified three wrestlers each our first two years. We won seven of seven matches today in the National Tournament qualifying round. We are proud of them and their performance. They represented Maryville well."
Brandon Oshiro started the quarterfinals of 125 with a 10-9 decision over Cory Monteforte of Anderson. He dropped into the consolation bracket but reached the finals with a 9-1 major decision over Ronzel Darling of Wisconsin-Parkside. In the third-place match, Oshiro dropped a 5-1 decision but qualified for nationals for the first time.
At 141, Darick Lapaglia was edged out 3-1 by UNC-Pembroke's Daniele Ownbey, who is No. 6 nationally in the weight class. Lapaglia recorded a fall at the 2:15 mark, his third of the tournament, to reach the consolation finals. Against No. 3 B.J. Young of Newberry, Lapaglia recorded an 8-3 decision to win the third-place match.
Joey Moorhouse dropped his semifinal match of the 149-pound division to No. 7 ranked Cameryn Brady of Indianapolis but won his consolation match by a 3-2 score. In the third-place bout, Moorhouse emerged with a 3-1 win to punch his second straight trip to the national tournament.
Dimitri Willis, who is ranked No. 8 at 165, lost to No. 6 ranked Jeff Weiss of Indianapolis by an 8-2 score. Willis bounced back with a fall over Nick Fishback of Wisconsin-Parkside to reach the consolation finals. He faced Findlay's Bradely Metz but was on the short end of a 6-4 decision.
At 174, Zeb Wahle was narrowly defeated 4-3 in two overtimes in his semifinal match, but he turned the tables and won a double OT match 6-5 to reach the consolation finals against Joe Pittman of Newberry. Wahle again had to work overtime but rolled up the points in the extra sessions to win third place 7-2.
Nick Burghardt, who is ranked No. 8 at 184, won his semifinal matchup 5-2 to advance to the championship match against McKendree's Jon Vogt. In the title bout, Burghardt was unable to tie up the match and dropped a 2-0 decision.
In the heavyweight semifinals, Walker toppled Tiffin's Kevin Christman, who was ranked eighth nationally, by a 5-2 score to reach the finals. Facing Ashland's Tyler Houska for the title, Walker picked up the regional championship with an 8-5 victory to cap off a successful afternoon for the Saints. Walker's regional championship is the fourth won by a Saints wrestler in the third-year program. Walker was voted the Freshman of the Regional Tournament.
Maryville University and the city of St. Louis will serve as the host for the 2015 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championship which will be conducted at Chaifetz Arena.
