Wrestling Takes Third at DII National Championship

- On the final day of the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships in Cleveland, Maryville brought home five All-Americans who posted two fourth-place finishes, one fifth, one sixth and one seventh place. As a team, the Saints took third place with a total of 58.5 points out of 36 teams.

"We could not be more proud of our team and its performance at the National Tournament this weekend," Saints head coach Mike Denney said. "We had five All-Americans, and they are bringing home a third-place tournament trophy to Maryville. I want to congratulate our coaching staff for developing our young team during the season. This is a tremendous accomplishment for such a young group."
 
In the championship bracket semifinals, Donnell Walker dropped a 5-0 decision to undefeated Jacob Mitchell of California Baptist. In the consolation semis, Walker won via a fall in the tiebreaker over Indianapolis' Evan Wooding. In the third-place match, Steve Butler held off Walker for the consolation title.
 
Darick Lapaglia recorded a fall at the 2:54 mark to win the seventh-place match in the 141-pound classification over Kyle Webb from Lindenwood. Lapaglia garnered the NWCA Gorrarian Award for the most falls during the national tournament in the least amount of time. He notched three falls in a total time of 6:41 to lead the tournament. Dimitri Willis had a fall at 2:02 over St. Cloud State's Gabe Fogarty to advance to the consolation semifinals. He dropped his next match but rebounded to down Brock Smith of Nebraska-Kearney 6-2 to bring home fifth place at 165.
 
Zeb Wahle posted a narrow 3-1 win to advance to the 174 consolation semis before dropping a match to Patrick Martinez of Nebraska-Kearney. Wahle finished his tournament with a sixth-place. At 184, Nick Burghardt posted a 4-3 decision and followed up with a 4-0 win over Kyle Piatt of Western State to reach the consolation finals. Burghardt was edged late but added a fourth-place finish to the Maryville collection.
 
The Saints look forward to the 2015 National Championship as Maryville, the St. Louis Sports Commission and the city of St. Louis will be hosts of the tournament held at Chaifetz Arena.
