Box Score Springfield, Ill. - Lance Kohler scored less than five minutes into the game at Illinois Springfield, and goalie Eddie Starr and the Maryville defense made it stand up in a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Illinois Springfield Friday night in Springfield, Ill.
UIS had a shot in the first minute but Starr steered the attempt away to keep the game scoreless. The Saints struck at the 4:57 mark for the only tally of the contest. Luke Gilsinger found Kohler at the 18-yard box, and Kohler drilled in a shot to the lower left. The Prairie Stars nearly equalized midway through the half as Starr again made the save. Michael Scharf nearly doubled the Maryville lead but his attempt was stopped.
Early in the second half, Gilsinger's bid for a score was stopped, and UIS came back on the counter. Starr stood tall in the net and denied the Prairie Stars again. The home squad looked to tie the game in with a flurry of three shots in the final minutes but Starr and the Saints held on to record their third clean sheet of the season.
The Saints up their record to 2-1-3 overall, 1-1-1 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars are now 2-3 overall, and winless in the league at 0-3. The Saints stay on the road and play again Sunday as they travel to face Southern Indiana.
