Men's Soccer Suffers First Road Loss of Season at USI

Box Score Evansville, Ind. – The Maryville men's soccer team was unbeaten in three road contests this season, but a trip to face Southern Indiana ended the spotless mark as the Screaming Eagles dealt the Saints a 5-1 defeat. The Saints slip to 2-2-3 overall, 1-2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

USI jumped on top in the 13th minute of action as Josh Weinzapfel scored. Maryville goalie Eddie Starr kept the Saints close as he made four strong saves to keep the deficit at just one goal. Matt Galvin had the first good scoring chance for the Saints but his shot was saved midway through the first half. Kevin Doherty nearly drew the Saints level when his shot hit the post in the 42nd minute of action. USI almost doubled its lead in the final minute of the half before Starr denied the attempt.

However, USI's Braiden Acton scored two goals about five minutes apart for the cushion the Screaming Eagles needed. Maryville got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute when Andrew Russell found the back of the net on a breakaway. The Screaming Eagles (2-3-1, 1-2-1) put the game away with two more scores in the second half.

The Saints are back in action Friday when they host William Jewell in a GLVC doubleheader, with the men's game starting at 1:30 p.m.
