Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Maryville men's soccer team broke out for seven goals as the Saints opened the 2014 season with a 7-2 victory at Southwest Baptist Thursday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo. The seven scores are the most since an eight-goal outburst against Waldorf (Iowa) Sept. 6, 2008.
Host SBU took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on a Saints own goal. The Saints answered with two goals in just over a minute. Nick Doherty opened the Saints scoring with a tally in the 39th minute, and Bill Stimac put Maryville ahead just over one minute later. The Saints took that margin into halftime before taking control in the second half.
Doherty recorded a brace with his second score of the day in the 65th minute, what would prove to be the game-winning goal, for a 3-1 Saints lead. Lance Kohler and Ryan Butchart both found the back of the next just under two minutes apart as Maryville took command. Butchart recorded the Saints' second brace when he scored in the 84th minute. Kevin Doherty added the Saints' final goal of the day two minutes later. The Bearcats tacked on a late goal in the waning moments of the game for the final margin.
The Saints won a season opener on the road for the first time since 2008. Maryville looks to build a two-game winning streak at it ventures to Kansas to face Newman Sunday afternoon.
