The Maryville women's soccer team pushed three goals past city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis en route to a 3-1 victory in the regular season finale. The Saints three scores were the most the Tritons have surrendered all season.
Â
In the 15th minute, the Saints struck first. From the right side,
Rachel Wiesehan flighted a perfect pass to the middle that senior
Hana McGinis headed into the goal for the early 1-0 lead. At the half hour mark, the Saints doubled their lead.
Allison Verville battled two UMSL defenders at the top of the penalty area and emerged from the pack with the ball. She nailed a hard shot that took a slight deflection off a defender over the goalie but under the bar for a 2-0 Maryville lead.
Â
The Tritons pulled one goal back in the 52nd minute of play. UMSL passed the ball forward and pushed the ball across the line to cut the Maryville advantage to 2-1. However, the Saints sealed the win in the 61st minute. Verville knocked a long through ball up the right side of the UMSL defense.
Dani Schmitz ran onto the pass and chipped the ball over the charging keeper and into the net for a 3-1 lead cushion. The Saints nearly added onto their edge when
Kaley Ruff rifled a shot off the UMSL crossbar and had another attempt saved.
Â
The Saints defense did not allow another shot in the last 15 minutes as Maryville improved to 7-7-3 overall, 6-6-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL falls to 10-3-4 overall, 8-3-4 in the league. The Saints finished with their best conference and overall record since joining the GLVC.
